Grapple Skidder vs. Cable Skidder: Two Tools for Effective Harvest
When it comes to logging in Central New York, one machine doesn’t fit every job. Skidders are essential for moving logs from where they’re cut to the landing, and two main types are widely used: cable skidders and grapple skidders. At Grabeldinger Firewood & Logging, we run both—because each has its own strengths that make it the right choice depending on the terrain and harvest plan.
Cable Skidders
Cable skidders have been a staple in forestry for decades. Smaller than grapples, they rely on a winch system to pull logs in before skidding them out.
How They Work:
Operators pull out the winch line, set a choker chain on the log, and winch it back to the skidder before dragging it to the landing.
Where They Excel:
Handle steep or uneven terrain where machines can’t safely travel directly.
Reach and pull logs from otherwise inaccessible spots.
Offer precise control in woodlots where careful planning matters.
Grapple Skidders
Grapple skidders are built for speed and maneuverability, using a hydraulic claw to grab and haul logs.
How They Work:
The operator backs up, clamps onto a log or bunch, and drags them out without needing chokers.
Where They Excel:
Work best on gentler terrain with more room to maneuver.
Reduce manual labor—operators never leave the cab.
Move smoothly around standing trees, helping limit damage to the rest of the forest.
Using Both Together
The real advantage comes from combining both machines.
On longer skids, we may bunch logs with the grapple first. Then the cable skidder can hook multiple chokers and make the pull in fewer trips. This reduces traffic on skid roads and minimizes ground disturbance.
On tough slopes, the cable skidder reaches timber that a grapple can’t.
On accessible ground, the grapple keeps production moving quickly and efficiently and position the grapple to avoid other trees.
By owning and operating both, we can adapt to any woodlot and work in the most effective, least disruptive way.
Final Thoughts
Every stand is different, and so is every harvest. Grapple skidders and cable skidders each have their place, and together they give us the flexibility to log efficiently, safely, and sustainably here in Central New York.
